Transportation choices can have a big impact on sustainability. Schools transport a notable percent of Oregon’s total population every school day. Schools operate and maintain, or contract, bus fleets and other vehicles. Bus fleet considerations include fuel type, vehicle efficiency and route planning, which impact air quality and hence human health (and global stability as everyone strives to access oil!). Vehicle maintenance practices are important too, often involving toxic substances that must be properly managed in order to avoid negative impacts to those using them and to the environment.

Appropriate opportunities to foster walking and biking among both staff and students will eliminate environmental impacts while improving personal wellness, and supporting a sustainable lifestyle.
