Managing Sustainability
For Help |
Individual projects to improve the sustainability performance of a district are a great start, but they tend to disappear when the person spearheading them moves on. Also, they are generally not planned with a coordinated systems strategy.
You’ll get the most from your efforts, whatever their scope may be, by managing them. Eventually, the sustainability measures need to be integrated into formal district procedures to make them permanent. Successes need to be recognized and shared via an integrated plan to monitor, track and report on progress. Progress needs to be ensured with a plan to update goals and activities as needed. Sustainability efforts, like any well-managed activity, will be
maximized if there’s a plan to train everybody in the concepts
of sustainability.
When a school or district is ready, it can create a comprehensive, district-wide system to manage its sustainability journey. This allows for recognition and support from everyone, and considers the district as the integrated system that it is. It helps identify the right direction and steps for the journey to sustainability, which in some cases may not be the same as making an existing practice a bit more “green”. It also institutionalizes the effort, making it permanent as students, parents and staff move on.
