Sustainable Oregon Schools Initiative Sustainable Schools

Teachers

--More information will be added after the topic team focusing on student and teacher education meets--.

Teachers play an important role, both through their work educating students and in their capacity to help their school to operate more sustainably. Sustainability is not a new and additional topic to cram into the daily curriculum. Every existing topic can incorporate facets of sustainability, a goal best attained when every teacher understands the concept of sustainability. To begin, look through the info and resources on this website.

Some steps a teacher can take include:

  • Learn about sustainability.

    • Subscribe to the SOSI monthly electronic newsletter

    • Start learning about sustainability via this website and attending educational events.

    • Participate in a SOSI topic team.

    • Start a staff discussion group. Read and discuss sustainability-related books together or organize a discussion course from the Northwest Earth Institute: http://www.nwei.org/

    • Organize a school event with guest speakers presenting sustainability and related information. Invite the school board members.

  • Organize efforts in your school or district.

    • Form a district (school) sustainability team.

    • Get district staff to sign up for the SOSI E-news.

    • Assess your district’s (school’s) current status. This can start within a specific area, but should eventually be organization-wide. (See Taking Action, Schools and Districts)

  • Work with a particular area(s)

    • Select a topic area(s) of interest

    • Explore that section of the website.

    • Determine which Go-To organizations are available to help.

    • Set goals and develop an action plan. SOSI can help identify resources to help.
